We have found on our travels that a number of these new Pubcos are very good at maintaining a level of quality across their whole portfolio and it’s highly likely that you’ll have a great experience when you visit any of their establishments. We don’t just add all their pubs when we come across one we like as we prefer one of the Fat Badgers to experience each and every one we list. Occasionally we will list an establishment based purely on a recommendation but that will usually be on location (which can’t be disputed) rather than quality of beer or food. These Pubco’s aren’t necessarily pubs that are owned, they could be just a group of like minded pub owners who’ve formed an association because they share the same outlook on how a pub should be run like the fabulous ‘Great Inns of Britain’ set up by Sir Thomas Ingilby, owner of the magnificent Boar’s Head at Ripley who once found a 17th Century recipe inside the Castle so started brewing his ‘Crack Shot’ Ale. There are a few Pub Companies that we’ve happened across such as the day Fat Badger Kilo was driving across Cheshire on his way try out the London Road Ale House in Stoke when he halted to be able to cross the A49 and spotted a rather nice looking converted Victorian Schoolhouse, so he pulled in for a pint finding a gem serving great ales and what looked like lovely food with a fantastic range of gins behind the bar. On further inspection once he’d returned to his sett he found that the Cholmondeley Arms was part of the Cheshire Cat Pubs & Inns group & instantly recognised the similarities to the Fitzherbert Arms which he’d previously been to a number of times - both superbly run establishments and we look forward to trying all the establishments in the Cat Club. Although it’s obviously very difficult to keep on top of all the changes with pubs and pub companies, particularly in these uncertain times following Covid we are trying to keep as up to date as we can so if you know of any other good establishments or indeed quality pub operators, please let us know using the pub Suggestion form and we’ll do our best to update the site. The most up to date version of the site is the map page.

Pubco’s we Like!

Although we’ve stated we would love all pubs to be Free Houses, we are never going to see the demise of the big pub companies because when run well, any pub is capable of making a profit. There are Pubco’s we don’t like such as Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns but that doesn’t necessarily mean that pubs that they own aren’t worth a visit. Many are run exceptionally well by hard working Landlords and if we find those, we’re happy to recommend them. Since the government decided in 1989 that large breweries could own a maximum of 2,000 pubs, many new smaller pub companies have been formed
