In the eastern section there are dairy and livestock-raising uplands, and the western section features farmlands and industries such as coal mining, quarrying, and hosiery manufacture. The county has been the scene of many important battles and Richard III's defeat at Bosworth in 1485 marked the end of the Wars of the Roses. The city of Leicester was founded in Roman times and the vestiges of Roman occupation are evident in the Jewry Wall and Archaeology Museum.
